Hello!

I am the wife of an American disabled veteran. My husband was disabled in the line of duty in 1990, and is rated 100% service-connected and Individually Unemployable (IU) by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
My husband and I have a beautiful three-year-old daughter and we live in a rural area of upstate New York. We have recently fallen on hard times, due to various circumstances that have arisen in our lives, and despite my having excellent qualifications, I have been unable to secure any form of employment in our area. We have now arrived at a place where we will lose our home if a miracle does not happen, and if I understand what I read on the Department of Veterans Affairs sites, even after we lose our home, we will be in terrible circumstances as our home is financed with a Veteran's Home Loan, and the Department of Veterans Affairs may garnish my husband's Disability Compensation for indebtedness to the U.S. government.
It amazes me that we could be caught in such a conundrum, as it was only a few months ago that the Department of Defense wanted to give my husband yet another award, this one for being a "Cold Warrior" in "The deadliest conflict in human history", as they described it.
I have desperately sought employment and been turned away despite an excellent resume and extensive experience in my field. I have sought employment despite the fact that my husband suffers from epilepsy due to a coup-contra-coup head injury that he received in the line of duty in 1990. Left home alone, he could suffer a phenomenon called "Status Epilepticus", in which he would experience seizures until he died, and I could come home from a job to find him dead. But I have no choice but to try to find employment outside the home. He also suffers from severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and does much better when I'm around to care for him.
If we could just rid ourselves of the large, unexpected burden of debt that has been placed upon us, my husband's compensation is enough for us to live and keep our home, and for me to ensure that I'm available to care for him and our three-year-old daughter. But there is no more time left for us to address our financial difficulties by me finding employment. We stand at the brink of losing our home, and possibly having my husband's income garnished because of it. Starting over, even if we moved to another area with better employment opportunities, would be difficult, as we would carry with us our financial burden. And my husband is now forty-four years old. He moved continually during his military career, and I know that it will be very difficult on him to start over, now that he finally has a home. He entered the armed forces at seventeen.
My husband and I are not the type of people who go around looking for handouts. In fact he is unaware that I've done this, and would probably be very upset if he knew, but we are so terribly desperate! And so I have decided, as a last, desperate attempt to keep our home, to turn to the kindness of strangers, to something that I have always believed in, to the goodwill of the American people, for help in a situation that seems helpless.
My husband spent a large portion of his career "forward deployed" because of his military occupation. He served some truly arduous duty, and in the end, he gave nearly everything that he had to his country, and never once have I heard him complain that it was unfair that he was disabled in the line of duty. When the Soviet Union collapsed, my husband was one of the men who helped end the cold war. When the Berlin Wall fell, it was because of the efforts of men like him. And when Kuwait was liberated, my husband was serving.
Please, if you have it in your heart to help a good man who has fallen on terrible, unexpected times, along with his wife and three-year-old girl, send anything you can, even a dollar would be deeply and sincerely appreciated, to:

J.H. Brown
PO Box 133

If you should choose to send a check, please make it payable to J.H. Brown. Please copy this letter and forward it to friends and family or post it in your favorite forum, as before God, it is a true and sincere plea for help in a situation where it seems there is no hope. And thank you in advance for your help to allow a disabled veteran and his family to keep their home. God bless you all for your kindness!

Sincerely,

A Desperate Wife and Mother, 17 April 2003
