Eugene,

I appreciate your article but I have a couple of questions. The first question deals with the part about sonship. You gave a lot of different meanings and connotations of sonship but I wasn't sure into which of these definitions you classified Jesus. (Considering items 1-8 as definitions, and 9-11 as Bible expressions for Jesus)

Is Jesus the Son of God or not?

Steve,

There is no question about Jesus being the Son of God. Adam and the angels are called sons of God (Luke 3:38, Job 1:6, 2:1, 38:7). We are sons of God (Matthew 5:9, Romans 8:14, 8:19, 9:26, Galatians 3:26). I presented a wide range of possible meanings to the word.

God’s revelation to us is given in terms of human language. Consequently, the Sonship of Christ must be understood by all that the Scripture specifies about Christ’s relationship to the Father, qualified by the full range of the possible meanings of the word “son.”

I assume you noticed that “son”, by itself, doesn’t demand a literal birth.

Why does Scripture call Jesus the Son of God?

Here is a quote from Ellen White:

Quote:
The great Creator assembled the heavenly host, that He might in the presence of all the angels confer special honor upon His Son. The Son was seated on the throne with the Father, and the heavenly throng of holy angels was gathered around them. The Father then made known that it was ordained by Himself that Christ, His Son, should be equal with Himself; so that wherever was the presence of His Son, it was as His own presence. The word of the Son was to be obeyed as readily as the word of the Father. His Son He had invested with authority to command the heavenly host. Especially was His Son to work in union with Himself in the anticipated creation of the earth and every living thing that should exist upon the earth. His Son would carry out His will and His purposes but would do nothing of Himself alone. The Father's will would be fulfilled in Him. {SR 13.2}

The nature of the Holy Spirit is a mystery. Men cannot explain it, because the Lord has not revealed it to them. AA 52

In the sense that we describe the work of the Holy Spirit we are safe. But, if we say more than this we cross onto dangerous ground. True?

In regard to the Sonship of Jesus Christ, see Why is Jesus called the Son of God?

You asked—Why does Ellen White call Christ the Son of God in SR 13.2?

The text doesn’t say. If the answer isn’t revealed anywhere then it’s not a meaningful question to ask—unless you enjoy conjuring up theories from pure speculation.

Regarding the EGW quote about the Holy Spirit: Are you straining to see some new and novel idea? What is revealed is revealed. “Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7). You would be well advised to study the messages of the prophets and never entertain any thought about trying to see hidden meanings in order to fabricate your own new and startling message.
