Why is Jesus called the Son of God?
In a sense, we are all sons and daughters of God.
Recall the words of the apostle Paul in Athens when he introduced his gospel in a meeting of the Areopagus:
| Quote: | God
is not far from each one of us. For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, We are his offspring.
Therefore since we are Gods offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stonean image made by mans design and skill. Acts 17:27-29. |
The Jews also spoke of God as their Father.
| Quote: | We are not illegitimate children, they protested. The only Father we have is God himself. John 8:41.
The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the desert. There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place. Deuteronomy 1:30-31.
They have dealt corruptly with Him; they are no longer His children because they are blemished; they are a crooked and twisted generation. Do you thus repay the LORD, you foolish and senseless people? Is not He your Father, who created you, who made you and established you? Deuteronomy 32:5-6.
For you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us, and Israel does not acknowledge us; you, O LORD, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name. Isaiah 63:16.
But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand. Isaiah 64:8. |
The question should be, is Jesus a son in a way that you and I are not? The answer is yes. Heres the essential meaning to the Sonship of Jesus Christ, which doesnt apply to us:
In a royal family, a son is a person not in the servant class but in the family class. In the Bible, all created beings are in the servant class (Revelation 22:8-9, 19:10, 19:5-6). Technically, we are only sons by adoption (Romans 8:15, 8:23, 9:4, Galatians 4:5, Ephesians 1:5). Compare that with Jesus high standing. |
