Hi,
I believe after studying books on Daniel that its first prophetic sectio/unit (Daniel 2) goes a little further from the generallly-accepted view:
Neo-Babylonia, Medo-Persia, Greco-Macedonia,Rome,Second-Advent
I believe that the mixture of iron-clay does have a primary application of inter-marriages used as a goal to unite Europe to a Holy Roman Empire yet I also believe that it alludes to the authors behind such moves and intrigues, namely the union of churchcraft and statecraft known to us as Roman Catholicism/Papacy.
In the parallel chapter of Daniel 7, the Papacy become more visible in the symbol of the "little horn" or Eleventh Horn.
As in Daniel 2, it is a mixture of metal (iron) and non-metal (clay), there in Daniel 7, we have a mixture of beast (non-descript beast) and non-beast (mouth and eyes of a man).
In light of this, I believe that we should understand Daniel 2 as the skelelon/outline of the whole book with the following:
Neo-Babylonia - Medo-Persia - Greco-Macedonia, Rome, Papacy behind Moves to Unite Europe back to a "United States of Europe" or "Holy Roman Empire" - Second Advent
The Papacy has a strong link with Europe and its Bloody History. A church "christian" in name with a strong occupational occupation is clealy revealed in the very first prophecy of Daniel.
A french book "soupir de la terre," published by Vie & Sante (which I believe to be the french translation of Secrets of Daniel) does endorse this very interpretation and it quite explicit in its explanation.
God Bless you.
