According to Genesis, the stars were created on the fourth day of creation. Two days later, Adam was created. From Adam to Jesus, there was about 75 generations from Luke 3. Methuselah was the oldest man ever to live and was 969 years old so it would be quite generous to say that each generation lasted 1000 years. For conservative estimates, let's say they did and that each member in the geneology of Luke 3 begat a child at the very day of their death. This would yeild 75000 years from Adam to Jesus. Adding 2000 years from Jesus to now, we get 77000 years from Adam to today, which would be the time from when the bible says the stars were created to today, MAXIMUM.
Now there are galaxies with billions of stars that are millions of light years away. It would take light millions of years for the light from such stars to reach earth.
So, why do we see the light from such stars? Seems that they came into existence much earlier than the bible says they did. Creationism does not fit the scientific data. Evolution, however, does.

I've got the feeling that when you talk about "Creationism", you're talking about "Young Earth Creationism", the idea that planet Earth is only THOUSANDS of years old as opposed to BILLIONS of years old as I and quite a few other Christians believe. For the record, I believe that the Universe itself is around 13.8 billion years old.
You're in the "ballpark" when you say that there was something like 77000 years between Adam and Jesus. I and others (see www.reasons.org) believe that for BILLIONS of years, PRIMITIVE life existed on this earth then tens of thousands of years ago, (somewhere between 30,000 and 70,000) man was created.
NO, the Bible DOES NOT tell us at all about the timespans involved. We could argue about the meaning of the word "day" until the "cows come home" and never get anywhere. Suffice it to say that in my opinion (and that of the "Reasons To Believe" ministry) there is much more evidence in the Bible for an ancient earth than a young one.

thanks, Ken
