Gene

Hello. How are you? I hope you are well. We have not spoken for a long time. I would be pleased to speak with you again and to become reaquainted. I have never ceased loving you and I have the great hope that you continue to be well. Can we speak?

Persons who obey the truth have no partnership with those who have seared their conscience. Believers in Scripture should never befriend a betrayer of Christ. If repentance from Judas type treachery were possible, the conversion would be noticeable. There would be an obvious transformation in mind and a dramatic shift in life. Outrageous lies are not an evidence of repentance.

Dear Gene,

I completely understand your response. When I was drinking, my mind and spirit were both unhealthy and unreliable and I cannot depend on my memory or rationality during that time. I am completely at your mercy and your willingness to forgive, but at least know that I am genuinely sorry for failing our friendship.

As for life changing transformations, though I was able to stop smoking through prayer alone, I found it necessary to enter a formalized program to stop drinking alcohol. It has been challenging but successful so far. At least I have been reminded that every sober breath I draw depends upon the grace and will of God and my continued focus. I'm not much of a saint and do not disagree with your statements about not associating with me - I wouldn't much care to associate with me either, but I don't have a choice - so I'm trying to get better.

I have other changes I need to make, with the Lord's help I will make them. You have been a great help and inspiration to me. I don't think I would have made it in life as far as I have without your help in the past.

AW,

Did you ever know Jesus and then turn against him?

JR,

You wanted to speak with me on the phone. There's a high probability that I'll be home tomorrow morning. Call me then if you like.

I emailed you my telephone number.

I guess you could say that... I was raised as a catholic and went to a catholic school until I was 11.
but of course, I can't turn against jesus if I'm not even sure if he existed.
although I am against religion so you could certainly say that.

It's not in my power.

Christ says, "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent" (Revelation 3:19).

Gene,

Thank you for the encouragement. I would still like to speak with you on the phone some time, but I want to have a longer successful track record of being "clean and sober" before doing so. I don't have the courage to call you and have you ask me, "how long has it been since you stopped drinking," and then I answer, "well, I've been trying very hard for many months, but have only been completely successful for about 4 weeks."

I would rather be able to say, "many months."

JR,

I'm sure that there are many totally self-absorbed hedonists who realize that freedom from intoxicants favors their temporal self-interests. If they can stop drinking completely, maybe you can too.

For you to acquire faith, love for God and love for the truth, that's the miracle I want to see.

Just remember that you don't have to believe in god or have faith in order to quit and be happy. Don't worry if you don't, as you can still quit :P

Your admission of not having those items that I believe are essential for salvation and friendship with me (faith, love for God and love for the truth) is a marvelous achievement in becoming self-aware.

Gene

You say so - I have reached the conclusion that your hatred of me cannot be quenched. There is no point in further dialogue

You do not determine if my faith and love for God are sufficient or present: God does. You are not God.
